Top of the morning, friends of the Perch!

Perchcast is back for the 2021-22 academic year, and we’re leading off with a great episode, featuring a long conversation with 1989 CAA Player of the Year Trent Mongero, and a guy we’d love to see become the 2022 CAA Player of the Year, Taber Mongero.

Nearly 30 years after his father laced it up for Coach Bobby Guthrie, Taber arrived at UNCW and earned the starting job at shortstop, where he quickly became a fan-favorite thanks to his all-out effort, steady defense and timely hitting.

It was quite the journey to Wilmington, though, as Taber began his college career at Gardner-Webb before a broken thumb set him on a path to the College of Central Florida, and ultimately, fulfilling his dream of becoming a Seahawk.

“I thought me breaking my thumb, I thought the night that it happened, it was the worst thing that could have possibly happened to me because I was draft eligible, I was off to a hot start,” Taber Mongero said. “It ended up opening the greatest door that’s ever been opened for me in my entire life. It allowed me to chase the dream that I thought was gone, and long story short, I’m here playing for UNCW today and couldn’t be happier. It’s just an unbelievable blessing, and I think about it all the time.”

After a successful career as a high school baseball coach in North Carolina and Georgia, Trent Mongero recently retired, but you’ll still find him on a field most days, working infield camps around the nation and sharing his wisdom on the game and beyond for his 22,000+ YouTube subscribers.
